The never ending fight

Ben's Game was a very good game to show the fight of cancer and how is not easy. This game was fun to play even though the topic is not fun one. Ben's game shows that the fight is hard with the cells allows mutating and your body is always getting sick. Schools should cover more about cancer being it is such a powerful virus that kills so many. Here i created another game in which students must fight off the nerf balls which are cancerous cells. Students must roll the cancer cells out of their area and keep their area (body) healthy. Its should be hard for both teams because they will be rolling the balls into the other areas but this represents the fight against cancer and how the fight is constantly occurring.

EDU 255 Final Part 1

This news piece was done in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan which is in Canada, and is north of the U.S. boarder. I thought this news piece was very valuable and shows physical education is needed in the schools curriculum. This piece shows that with physical activity students are more attentive and perform better in other subjects. Physical activity gets the hippocampus which is located in the brain working and it releases BDNF which is called a ‘miracle grow’ for the rest of the brain. BDNF helps students stay calm this being a big help to teachers in The City Park Collegiate School because students in this school have many learning disabilities and being able to control themselves will help the teachers teach. Teachers now being able to teach distraction free and students who are more focused will improve education programs.

The results show physical activity is working not only for healthier lifestyles but to better improvements in other subject areas. In one school year the fluency rates went up 121.4% comprehension went up 230% and math also went up 17.3%. Reading, writing and sight of words all went up a couple grade levels too. Math also went up 17.3%. Students are now more interested in their academics and enjoy learning then they did before.

In NYS students are involve with physical education, but it is not like this. Here students tend to stand around waiting for their turn of wait for the ball to come to them. In City Park students perform vigorous physical activity for at least 45 minutes a day, this guarantees optimal physical activity. Students must increase their heart rate to 65-75% of the maximum and maintain this; this is the biggest difference between this program and a normal physical education class.

Students now have better relationships with their teachers and also their peers because they are more engaged in their academics. Some students have changed their lives around because they now see what they could be doing with themselves instead of taking drugs and taking part in troubling activities.

Lesson Plan- Lab D

Task Progression- Lab D

Then and Now

Looking back from the first time i taught to now many things have changed. I am now able to respond better and manage behavioral problems, give better feedback to the learner, and also know ways that i can help students in the task weather its making it easier or more advanced. This class and the ability to teach different lessons and be able to go back and see the lessons being taught helped me change into a better teacher. From this class i learned different ways to become a better physical educator who doesn't just roll a ball out and has kids play, but one who breaks skills down giving students the chance to become experts in physical activity. EDU 255 gave me the ability to become the new generation will be giving me to students then just a grade but a better mind set on a health lifestyle and active life.

Lab D..Step Aerobics

Lab D was our final teaching lab. The lesson i taught was step aerobics, even though i do not have a great background in this i enjoyed learning and teaching it. I had many steps i researched but the two i taught were the helicopter and reverse v step. These two steps were more of the difficult ones for students because they force balance and agility because students must spin and also come across the board.
When assessing my video i used the time coding form which allowed me to see how organized the lesson was. The score i received from this was very good being that i had students doing activity while i explained certain tasks this helped cut down waiting time for the students and allowed more time for activity. Compared to lab C and the short teaching lessons we've done Lab D i thought went very well. I was able to recognize when students were acting up and was able to act on it very quickly and effectively. Since the last teaching lessons i gave more feedback to more students and was able to help more students struggling with the tasks. Lab D was overall a successful lesson even though it was shorter then 15 minutes i covered two difficult tasks, gave plenty of feedback and handled behavioral issues.

Lab C

During the second teaching of Lab C some obstacles were thrown at me. One of the students was misbehaving and being rude to me and his fellow classmates. i tried to ignore it thinking he will stop because i am not giving him attention but he continued so i took action and pulled him from the rest of the class and sat him by himself. I should have took earlier action on this when he acted up during the IA, but with more experience these actions will come easier and quicker. But with the lesson i missed many key points i wanted to hit on, 7 minutes is hard to work with for an IA and start of a lesson. Other than that i felt many things went well. During the lesson i was able to keep my voice up back to the wall and give positive and constructive feedback. If we had a third chance at this i would do many things differently but i will just take my mistakes and convert them into good teaching habits. Practice makes perfect!!

Bouncing Balls

This lesson was harder then most being that i have never played the Chinese game of bouncing ball before. But i worked my way through it, even though i didn't get to touch on many things i wanted to. when listening to the audio from the lesson i still seemed to make a couple of small mistakes with saying 'um' and alright a lot. but that is how we learn from reading the scripts and changing our habits. What i also noticed i gave some students feedback on how to change what they were doing on different cues and tasks then i asked. It good that we get lab C twice because now i know more on what to hit on so i will be able to change the lesson so i can work on those issues. I also forgot to do a demo before the lesson so i know many students were kind of lost in the fact they didn't have any idea of what i was looking for, but this is why we have two shots at it so we can fix our mistakes. but other then these mistakes i felt all went well and i am ready to improve on the lesson and be able to do it next time with no flaws!!

Ultimate Frisbee

Ultimate Frisbee is a great game to play because it is fasted paced and fun. when teaching ultimate to the class we all had an mp3 recorder hooked up to us so you can here what was said during the lesson. i found myself saying alright and guys a bunch of times. this all will fade away with more teaching times and practice. i thought through out my lesson i was loud and clear with instructions and feedback. being able to go back and listen to what was said is a great tool so you can make changes and become a better speaker in front of students and large groups. also what i have a bad habit at is saying the same phrase twice, i.e. good cut good cut. all these bad habits i have will all be fixed and changed with the more practice and more chances i have to see what i say.

Time Coding

After reviewing my video and writing a time coding sheet for it, i see the areas i need to improve on. one area is shortening the management time so it lower then 15%. Another area i need to work on is making the activity time a little bit longer so the students have more practice time to work on the skills. this all will change with more teaching time we get and the more i practice.

FeedBack

Feedback is one of the most important parts of teaching. Without feedback no one will ever get better or understand what they are doing. When giving a student feedback your not only helping them but your letting them know that your still there and watching for certain cues. If you do not give feedback students will keep doing the task wrong and then would want to quit because they can not perform like everyone else. Positive feedback keeps the students interested and excited to perform again because you pointed out their strengths. in the end feedback is an important part of the lesson and without it students would not get better at the skills they lack.

Video Reflection

After reviewing my script from my mini-teaching video i did surprisingly well. I stayed away from the words 'um' and 'like' but did not really speak in tone that was appropriate for a gymnasium. Another thing i noticed that was wrong in the video was i was not enthusiastic about the lesson, which makes the students not interested. I also was not able to give feedback to the students because there was a student with no partner so i practiced throwing a ball with him. In that case i should of had him work with another group so i can help other students that were unable to perform the task. There are many things i can do to change these mistakes and with all the new teaching techniques we learned and will learn i look forward to working on them and watching them on film.

EDU 255 lets get it!!!!

First day

After watching myself teach the techniques of throwing a football, i noticed that i do not
speak in a voice that is appropriate for a gymnasium setting. Another teaching technique i noticed that i did not do well in was facing my students, and kept looking down. watching this dvd will allow me to fix the errors that i had and become a better teacher.
